I read a piece by Jay Caspian Kang in The New Yorker today. The actual title is If You Quit Social Media, Will You Read More Books?
I remembered it as If You Quit Social Media, Will You Exist?
That slip is the whole point. That’s the horror story. We are terrified that if we stop performing for the algorithm, we stop being real. The article argues we treat our brains like broken hard drives. We think deleting an app will optimize our processing speed. It doesn’t. You just end up staring at a wall.
This is exactly what I write about. The bureaucratic evil of managing your own soul like a failing KPI. The silence when the feed stops.
